Barents Institute
The official inauguration of the Barents Institute was held on the 1st February 2006. Growing international political attention, major economic interests for the rich natural resources on land and at sea, increasing pressure on the arctic environment and deep social divides across the national borders in the region contribute to the need for new multidisciplinary research in the humanities, in social and political science focusing the circumpolar north and the Barents Region.
The Barents Institute is mainly funded by the Norwegian Foreign Ministry. Its working language is English. It's located in the centre of the sub arctic village of Kirkenes. The institute is currently being developed into a research organisation of senior scientists and Post Doctorate Fellows, including one PhD Candidate, and about 5 MA Students mainly tutored externally.

Earth Sciences History: Journal of The History of Earth Sciences Society
"The History of the Earth Sciences Society (HESS) was founded in 1982 to...(bridge) the gap between the humanities and the sciences;...because the history of earth science is a global topic, a national group or a commission with limited membership may not be suitably flexible. A society open to all and cosmopolitan in composition and outlook provides this element of breadth;...in the past, even with all the other journals available, it has been difficult to find an outlet for scholarly works in the history of the earth sciences. A prime goal of the new society was immediate establishment of a refereed journal to serve the needs of its members;...historical studies of ideas concerning the Earth, institutions involved in such research, and prominent workers have seldom received much attention. With greater prominence and a journal dedicated to the field, more support for intellectual endeavors in the broad domain of geoscience history has been forthcoming."
